Five Wednesdays, beginning February 24, 2010
7:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Diane M.Caplin, Ph.D.
$62.50
You are invited to spend time this Lent thinking about the noonday demon and its opposite. Dr. Diane Caplin will cull from the works of Kathleen Norris and Kay Redfield Jamison insights into acedia and exuberance, respectively.
While the term may be unfamiliar, the state of acedia is prevalent in contemporary society, expressing itself as willful indifference, restless boredom, or even frantic busyness. It will be a good Lenten practice to learn to recognize the signs and to adopt ways of countering this soul-sapping state of being.
Leon Bloy once wrote: “You say you are a Christian. Then where the hell is your joy?” Exuberance, the height of joy expressed as a passion for life, is a perfect topic to study in preparation for Easter. Join us.
