Mount Saint Agnes Theological Center for Women

Fall 2007 Co-Sponsored Programs

Sacrifice, Holy & Unholy: Exploring self-gift in following Christ

The Catholic Community of St. Ignatius
in collaboration with
Mount Saint Agnes Theological Center for Women

Sacrifice, the Holy Sacrifice of Mass, and self-sacrifice are central to the vocabulary and life of Christians. In our contemporary world we see too many examples of distorted understandings of sacrifice and self-sacrifice. International scholar Dr. James Alison and several Baltimore-area scripture scholars, theologians, and pastoral ministers will explore the authentic understandings of sacrifice. A retreat and various cultural events seek to further deepen our understanding of Christ’s redemptive love.

All events are free, open to the public,
and held at St. Ignatius Church, except as noted below.

Who Sacrifices Whom to Whom? Unpicking Atonement's Knots
James Alison, Ph.D.
Monday, October 1, 2007
7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Drawing on his intense studies of René Girard, James Alison will examine the notion of sacrifice in the Christian tradition.  This two hour exercise, part of which will be interactive, is a dimension of the adult catechesis Dr. Alison is developing.  Mount Saint Agnes Theological Center for Women is proud to have introduced James Alison to Baltimore and, now, to be in collaboration with the church at St. Ignatius to bring his creative thinking to a wider audience.
